how to clean wooden floors.

28 Jul 2025

Wooden floors are beautiful, elegant, timeless… and surprisingly needy. They can require regular cleaning, refinishing, and protection from moisture and scratches. They can even be sensitive to environmental changes.

BUT with a little regular love (and our smol refillable floor cleaner), you can keep those planks gleaming without the drama.

3 things to remember…

  1. Not all wood is the same. There’s solid wood, engineered wood, and even engineered waterproof wood (the overachiever of the three).
  2. Water can be wood’s frenemy. Some wooden floors can handle a damp mop. Others? Less so. Always check if your wooden floor is suitable for a water-based cleaner before you get mopping.
  3. Dry floors = happy floors. Always dry them thoroughly after cleaning to avoid any long-term dramas.

so, let’s sweep into it.

Wooden floors take a battering and it can show… scratches from furniture, scuffs from shoes, toys, paws… you name it. But clean them right and they’ll stay gorgeous for years. Here's how:

1. vacuum or sweep.

Vacuum the floor or sweep first of all. A soft bristled brush or microfibre mop is perfect if you don’t want to get the vacuum out. It’s important to do this regularly because any dirt that’s left lying around on the wooden floor surface can lead to scratches.

2. floor cleaner.

If your wooden floor is happy with a water-based cleaner then you’re in luck with our refillable version!  Mopping has never been so easy-squeezy.

Just a few squirts directly ontp your floor. There’s no need to rinse… just wipe down with a damp mop. Alternatively - pour it into your spray mop and away you go. Smells like bergamot and green tea. (You’re welcome.)

3. a soft mop works best.

A microfibre mop is your wooden floor’s best friend. Work with the grain of the wood if you can because it helps to avoid any streaks. We’re here for the gleam after all!

4. dry your floors.

Use a clean dry mop or towel to buff everything dry. It’s one more way to keep streaks away and make your floor sparkle more brightly.

TOP TIP FOR SCUFF MARKS! You know, those annoying ones from dark-soled shoes… simply rub with a clean sock or tennis ball (yes, really). If it’s still not budging… sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on a damp sponge and gently buff. Rinse. Dry. Enjoy.

make that clean last longer.

  • No shoes inside. (You’ll be amazed how much less dirt comes in).
  • Pop a mat at every doorway. It’s like a dirt bouncer.
  • Clean up spills fast. Water left sitting on wood is a horror story waiting to happen.
  • Add furniture pads under anything that slides. Trust us.

a word on different wooden floors.

It’s also worth noting that not all wood wants the same kind of love.

  • Solid hardwood floors are not to be made over-wet.
  • Engineered wood (factory finished) is a bit more chill and can handle a damp mop.
  • Engineered waterproof is the strongest of all. But still: always dry after mopping.
  • Check your manufacturer’s advice before introducing anything new. Even us.
