20 May 2025

Welcome to your latest smoltalk - where cleaning meets climate, myths get busted and vinegar becomes the unexpected hero of your shower screen.

This month we’re diving into why saving water matters (even when it’s pouring outside), the simple swap that’s saving the nation’s mugs, and a vet practice that’s gone full smol (tails wagging included). Oh, and if you thought you needed blazing sunshine to dry laundry outdoors - we’ve got a breezy surprise for you. Let’s get into it...

Illustration water droplets, text: what's water got to do with it?

We get it. When the rain’s chucking it down, saving water doesn’t feel urgent. But here’s the deal: we still need to use water wisely.

  • Droughts are getting more frequent, rainfall is getting weirder and our water systems are under pressure. Less water in the right place at the right time = more stress on nature, and yes, even our cuppas.
  • The average UK person uses 142 litres of water a day. That’s the equivalent of a full bath or like running a tap full bore for 10 mins… and it’s a LOT for a small island with growing demand.
  • Saving water = saving energy. Hot water uses energy. The less we use, the more we cut carbon emissions, too. Win-win.

So with Water Saving Week fresh in our minds (12–16 May) how about 3 smol actions to make a big splash?:

1. switch to super-concentrated products

smol’s laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, handwash, sprays and more use way less water to make and ship - so every bottle’s already saving H₂O before it even reaches your house.

2. cut a minute off your shower

Feels tiny. Saves up to 12 litres every single time. That’s a bucketload. Literally.

3. full loads only, please

Whether it's the washing machine or dishwasher - make every wash count. It saves water and energy (and qualifies you as a water-wizard).

Illustration shower screen, text: glass half clean? Not any more!

Limescale? Soap scum? Shower glass that’s seen better days? Sounds like you need a smol hack attack… so let’s introduce you to an unlikely duo: white vinegar (limescale legend) and smol washing up liquid (soap scum sidekick)!

Find yourself a clean spray bottle and start by mixing up this grime-busting solution:

100ml warm white vinegar (just microwave it for 30 seconds)

100ml warm (not hot) water

3 drops of smol washing-up liquid

Spray it all over your shower screen and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes (30 mins if the screen is so foggy you mistook it for a portal to another realm). Then scrub. Squeegee. Gasp at the sparkle.

The vinegar tackles limescale.

The washing-up liquid lifts soap scum.

And together, they ditch the dirt without the harsh chemical cloud.

Clean glass. No crazy fumes. And your vinegar won’t stink up the bathroom, promise.

From muddy hooves to sparkling clinics… we love seeing smol out and about in the real world. Whether it's making homes shine or helping busy businesses behind the scenes, there’s nothing better than spotting our little bottles and tablets getting the job done.

So when we heard that LLM Farm Vets in Shropshire had been using smol across their veterinary practice since shortly after we launched back in 2018, we had to get in touch. From early starts to emergency callouts, their days are full-on - so we wanted to know how smol was helping them keep things clean, calm and full of caffeine… (their words not ours!).

why did your practice decide to switch to smol?

We decided to switch to smol as it’s always been our goal to become a more sustainable practice as a whole and this seemed like a great way to involve everyday items and create a difference step by step.

what smol products do you use most often and what do you love about them?

We use smol’s dishwasher tablets the most often and our support staff and vets alike have all agreed that they’re fantastic! As you can imagine, through the busy day-to-day life in a vet practice we drink a lot of tea and coffee. The dishwasher tablets are great as they work so well we never run out of clean mugs to get us through the day.

and has anything surprised you about using smol?

What’s surprised us about smol is how well it cleans without the use of all the extra chemicals that big brands swear by - just proves that more is not always better! And at such great prices!

We’re thrilled to be helping LLM vets in their day-to-day lives in some smol way. Clean mugs for those caffeine-fixes? We’re here for you!

Illustration sun, text: laundry needs the sun to dry outside.

Actually… not true. Your laundry isn't asking for a heatwave - it’s just looking for the right vibe.

Drying clothes is all about evaporation, and that depends more on humidity and airflow than sunshine. So here’s the good news:

  • A breezy day with humidity under 60%? That’s prime drying weather
  • Even 5–7°C can work just fine as long as it’s dry and there’s some wind
  • Sunshine does help a little (especially with stain-fading and bacteria-busting), but it’s the breeze and dry air doing the heavy lifting

So next time it’s cold-but-clear with a bit of wind - don’t let those clouds fool you. Peg out those pants and let nature do its thing. Because laundry doesn’t need heat, it just needs a little air time.

I wanted to say how impressed with the washing up liquid I was. I used to remove stains in my mugs using denture cleaner! Something I noticed as I washed up using your liquid, I no longer get stains in my mugs, and my microwave bowls - which are used daily - are going back to the white they originally were. Thank you for providing these products.

Sue, happy smol customer

Well thank you too, Sue! We love hearing how our plant-powered washing up liquid doesn’t just lift grease - it brings the sparkle.
