We've all heard it. "Make your bed as soon as you get up!"
But what if we told you… not making your bed in the morning is actually the smarter move; and it could actually be better for your health?
Because it turns out that leaving your bed a little messy in the morning might just be the secret to a cleaner, healthier bedroom with ZERO EFFORT required.
a clean sheet.
But surely the only way to a cleaner bed is to wash the bedding?
As a laundry detergent company, there’s no doubt we’re fans of a clean sheet and thank goodness smol capsules and laundry liquid get the job done in a planet-friendlier way. Recent YouGov¹ research shows the nation does enjoy settling down in a clean bed. Most of us wash our bedding once a fortnight BUT what if we could keep our beds cleaner for longer without doing any laundry?
Well, we can! We just need to STOP making the bed. Sounds wild? Let us explain!
unmake the bed.
With most of us shedding 1.5g of dead skin each day; much of it ends up between the sheets, making the perfect midnight snack for dust mites. These tiny creatures also thrive in the warmth we bring to our bed so it’s no wonder the average mattress can contain up to 10 million dust mites.²
By making your bed as soon as you get up, you're trapping in all that warmth, moisture and dead skin, creating the ideal breeding ground for these little pests.
mess means less.
… but airing out your bed = fewer mites.
When our sheets have a chance to breathe, they dry out and this makes life a lot harder for dust mites to survive and breed. So by not making your bed, you’re actually giving mites a harder time sticking around.

3 smol steps.
Try this for a more hygienic bed:
1. hang your duvet.
Yep, take it right off the bed and hoist it over the bedroom door. If it’s sunny outside - you could even pop it over the washing line. Dust mites hate natural sunlight and fresh air.
2. shake your pillows.
This will help to remove any dust. It will also make them nice and plump in time for bed!
3. make your bed.
Once it has aired for an hour or two. But remember… this is optional! You don’t have to make it if you don’t want to. Those dust mites have had all day to think twice about living in your bed, so when you grab your duvet at bedtime you’ll hopefully find things are a lot less crowded.
And pssst… here’s an EXTRA ZERO EFFORT hack to cleaner, fresher sheets.

best bamboo bedding.
Naturally luxurious and breathable bamboo bedding could be just the thing in the fight against the mite. What’s more, our friends at Panda London have the most beautiful bedding and linen sets all made from sustainably sourced bamboo.
But why bamboo?
- Bamboo fabric is breathable, so moisture evaporates, preventing dust mites from spreading.
- It has natural antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth of dust mites and bacteria.
- Being naturally hypoallergenic, bamboo bedding is also soft to the touch (perfect in the fight against allergy-prone itchy skin).
- Bamboo wicks away moisture and the tighter weave can block dust mites from the skin
So there you have it. In the battle against the dust mite, unmaking your bed is a great cheat to know. And if your bedding is made from bamboo… you’re one step ahead in the fight for cleaner sheets.
