will a cold wash still get my clothes clean?
30 Oct 2024
want to wash your clothes on cold without compromising on results?
No problem.
smol laundry capsules are perfectly designed for cold washes. It’s a fact!
You’ll still enjoy amazing results, super stain removal and lovely clean fresh laundry, even when you turn down to 20°C with our bio, non-bio and fragrance-free capsules.
but why so chill?
Because washing on cold gives you so much MORE for LESS.
- A 30-min 25°C cycle produces 50% less microfibres.¹
- Dropping from 30°C to 20°C washes uses nearly 40% LESS energy. ²
- Clothes last longer, shrink less and keep their vibrant colours.
- There’s less ironing (fibres won’t wrinkle as much).
- PLUS we save money and our carbon footprint drops!
In fact, the money and energy savings can be substantial…
There are around 40 million washing machines in the UK creating 2.26 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.³
What would happen if we used LESS hot water and all those washes dropped to 20°C?
We’d drastically cut our energy use which means MORE SAVINGS on our electricity bills.
But that’s not all.
Our carbon emission savings will grow too - by around 1.5 million tonnes.
That’s the same as planting over 73,000 trees, or over 90 acres of forest.
No wonder 20 is the new 40.
but will the clothes be clean?
YES! If you’re using smol capsules then your clothes are still going to be clean.
Our concentrated capsules are designed and tested especially to work well on colder washes, if that’s how you want to wash… even on a 20°C 30 minute cycle.
Here’s why:
- smol capsules dissolve fast and get to work quickly.
- accurate dosing means you don’t use too much. Too much detergent reduces the movement of your clothes in the water which stops them getting as clean.
- our capsule ingredients are designed to give amazing results in all temperatures which includes a cold wash; so don’t be scared to turn down the temp.
- if you’re washing with bio, its enzymes NEED cooler water. If you wash at 40°C or above, they lose their ability to digest stains.
some cold hard truths.
After rigorous testing across the standard Which? stain set… the proof is in the washing. Both smol non-bio and bio capsules are beating big brand names when it comes to getting things clean on cold.⁴
And just LOOK at our boosted bio stain removal power! With its brand new enzyme to tackle DNA and sebum not only is it an improvement on our old capsule it beats Persil bio hands down on stains.

Not yet convinced about the convenience of a cold wash?
Remember… washing our clothes in hotter water can actually damage them, fading their colours more quickly, weakening their fibres and shrinking them overall.
And don’t be fooled into thinking a hot wash is sanitising your laundry. Unless you have a sanitise cycle, the water just won’t be hot enough.
It’s really only necessary to sanitise clothes stained with nasty bacteria like faecal matter on nappies, vomit from an illness etc. Everyday stains and spills just don’t need sanitising.
So maybe it’s time to join the cool club and turn down that temperature dial?
When you’re washing with smol you’ll still see great results and your clothes, your wallet and the planet will thank you!
