Dropping a Dishwasher Tablet into the toilet bowl has become a surprisingly popular cleaning hack and it’s one we’ve heard from plenty of people over the years.
But while the internet may be full of clever things to do with a dishwasher tablet, there’s an important difference between something that can be done and something a product has been designed and tested to do.
So, can you clean your toilet with a dishwasher tablet?
Technically, you’ll find lots of people do. But it’s not a hack we’ve designed and tested for with our tablets in mind.
Why do people put dishwasher tablets in toilets?
Dishwasher tablets are powerful little cleaners designed to tackle grime and grease inside your dishwasher. So it’s no surprise people started testing them elsewhere around the home.
The usual internet trick involves dropping a dishwasher tablet into the toilet, leaving it to dissolve and then giving the bowl a scrub.
But it’s not quite what your Dishwasher Tablet was designed for.
What should you use to clean limescale from a toilet instead?
For everyday cleaning, stick to a product that’s actually designed for toilets and follow the instructions on the pack.
But if it’s stubborn limescale that brought you here in the first place, there’s another simple household trick you can try: white vinegar.
How to tackle toilet limescale with white vinegar.
Limescale is made up of mineral deposits left behind by hard water. Because white vinegar is acidic, it can help break those deposits down.
- Pop on some gloves and scoop out the water in the toilet bowl.
- Pour white vinegar directly over the areas of limescale
- If it’s high on the bowl sides, drench some toilet paper in vinegar and place on top
- Leave it to work for a few hours, or overnight for heavier build-up
- Give the bowl a good scrub with your toilet brush
- Flush to rinse everything away
If some limescale remains, you may need to repeat the process.
One very important cleaning rule: never mix vinegar with bleach or bleach-based cleaning products. If you've recently used another toilet cleaner, rinse the bowl thoroughly and follow the product instructions before using anything else.
