how to clean a weighted blanket.

Want to know how to clean your weighted blanket without drama or disaster?

You’ve come to the right place.

For many of us, weighted blankets are quite simply the champions of calm. But when it’s time to clean them? They can start to feel like giant sandbags. But DON’T PANIC and waste the tranquil zen your blanket just gave you so faithfully. You can clean your weighted blanket without ruining its magical filler - or your washing machine.

and here’s how to clean a weighted blanket.

1. read the label (yes, that means YOU).

Before you even think about hefting your weighted blanket into the machine, check its laundry care label. Manufacturers know their blankets best. If it says “spot clean only,” don’t argue. If it’s machine washable, follow their rules to the letter.

2. assess the mess.

If your blanket really only needs a light refresh then a quick spot clean is enough. Wet any dirty marks before applying smol stain gel with a clean cloth. Gently rub in the gel and leave to work for a couple of minutes before wiping clean with warm water and your cloth.

If you’ve had some sort of dirt disaster or the blanket simply needs a deeper clean; it’s time for some heavy handed cleaning.

3. the wash.

Before committing to a full wash, ensure your blanket care labels allow for this… and then choose your washing machine wisely! Weighted blankets are heavy (gasp), and not all washing machines are up for the challenge.

Use a front-loading or high-capacity washer. Regular top-loaders can throw a fit - seriously, don’t risk it! If your appliance isn’t up to the weight then head to your local launderette for a high capacity machine.

4. pick your programme.

Always use a gentle, cold water cycle to prevent shrinkage of your weighted blanket. smol laundry capsules are perfect thanks to their cold wash power. They’re designed for exceptional cleaning even on 20°C cycles so you’ll protect your blanket without going easy on the dirt! And just for this wash… skip the fabric softeners. They could clump together the filler so it’s not worth the risk.

5. drying.

Air-drying is always the safest bet. Lay the blanket flat on a drying rack or clean surface and turn it over at intervals so it dries evenly. If it’s summer time and the weather is fine then hang it out on the line! Avoid the tumble dryer because if the filler contains plastic pellets… heat can warp them horribly.

in summary:

Read your labels and remember, less is more. Weighted blankets don’t need frequent washing. Every 2-3 months should be enough even for blankets you use all the time. Cleaning your weighted blanket is all about patience and respect. Treat it like the cosy, anxiety-banishing treasure it is and it’ll keep hugging you back for years to come.
