how to clean laminate floors.

22 Dec 2025

Laminate flooring might look like hardwood, but treat it the same way and you could end up with swollen planks and streaky patches. It’s a durable, budget-friendly choice but it comes with its own set of cleaning rules.

And whether you’ve just had it installed or want to extend the life of the floors you’ve already got, here’s how to keep them looking their best (without accidentally ruining them).

for brilliant results.

What’s the best thing to clean a laminate floor with?

Well, the first rule of the laminate cleaning club is to keep moisture to a minimum. These floors have layers, and water can sneak into the seams if you're not careful. You don’t want that.

The safest, simplest cleaning setup is:

  • a soft-bristle brush or dry mop to get rid of daily dust and crumbs
  • a slightly damp microfibre mop (the kind that barely leaves a trail)
  • a gentle solution (dilute floor cleaner, washing-up liquid or white vinegar in warm water)

No fancy sprays. No harsh chemicals. No soaking. Just a light touch and a bit of regular TLC.

what to avoid.

And what should you NOT clean laminate flooring with?

Not all cleaning products are floor-friendly. Especially when it comes to laminate. Here’s what to steer clear of:

  • steam mops. They’re too hot, too wet, too risky.
  • excess water. If your mop’s dripping, it’s doing damage.
  • scrubbing tools. Abrasive pads will scratch the surface layer.
  • bleach or anything acidic. They’ll dull the finish fast.
  • polish/wax. They won’t soak in as they do on wood, and they’ll leave a cloudy residue.

N.B. If the label doesn’t specifically say it’s suitable for laminate, don’t risk it.

can laminate floors be wet mopped?

Nope (see above).

They don’t respond well to heavy moisture. A dripping mop is the fastest way to warp or bubble the boards. So stick to a barely damp mop (think wrung out so thoroughly you could almost use it to dust) and clean in small sections so the floor dries quickly. If in doubt, go drier.

how to keep laminate floors looking clean and shiny.

Shiny laminate isn’t about buffing or polishing - it’s actually all in the prevention.

Here’s how to keep that fresh-from-the-showroom finish:

  • sweep regularly to stop dust and grit scratching the surface
  • mop sparingly with the gentle solution of your choice
  • tackle spills fast (remember, moisture is laminate’s enemy)
  • avoid shoes indoors (especially stilettos and muddy trainers)
  • add felt pads to the bottom of furniture to avoid scrapes

If things still look a bit dull, a clean dry microfibre cloth can help bring back some shine (just give the floor a gentle once-over after mopping).

REMEMBER:

Laminate might be tough… but it’s not invincible.

With a little regular care (and by avoiding the classic cleaning mistakes), it’ll keep its good looks for the long haul. All it takes is the right tools, a light touch, and the ability to resist reaching for the steamer!
