Limescale in your toilet bowl? Again? We hear you.
If you live in a hard water area, it’s a recurring problem - just like in your kettle, on your taps and in the shower head. But don’t worry, we’ve got three simple ways to tackle it using things you will already have in your house: a smol dishwasher tablet, white vinegar and smol refillable bathroom spray.
But first…
what is limescale?
It’s that hard, chalky stuff that builds up anywhere hard water flows. It’s mostly made of calcium carbonate, and one thing is for sure, limescale loves your toilet bowl, pipes and appliances that use water. And once it’s there, scrubbing alone probably won’t cut it.
why does limescale build up?
Hard water is packed with dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates into the air as water vapour, it leaves behind stubborn mineral deposits known as limescale. It’s not harmful, just ugly. And the longer it sits, the harder it is to shift.
But if CAN be removed, never fear.
how to clean limescale from your toilet.
option 1: use a dishwasher tablet.
Think of your smol dishwasher tablet as a mini pumice stone. Pop on some rubber gloves and scrub directly onto the limescale stains. These tablets are designed to tackle hard water marks, so they’ll start dissolving the limescale as you go. Keep scrubbing until the marks vanish. Then flush.
Bonus tip overnight dishwasher tablet trick…
If your toilet isn’t looking too bad, drop a smol dishwasher tablet into the bowl before bed and let it do its thing overnight. Some people like to add a bit of hot tap water to help it dissolve faster, but that’s totally optional. In the morning, give the bowl a quick scrub and flush. Limescale gone.
option 2: vinegar soak.
White clear vinegar is an acid powerhouse, great for softening limescale so it’s easier to scrub away. Here’s what to do:
- Pour undiluted white vinegar into your toilet bowl, making sure to pour some up under the rim also!
- Leave it to sit for 3-4 hours (overnight is even better).
- Scrub with a toilet brush and flush.
- Repeat if needed.
Bonus tip: If the bowl is super stained with limescale - scoop out the clean water from the toilet so the ceramic sides are left exposed to the air - then use the method above to pour neat vinegar into the bowl to sit there undiluted overnight. Scrub it in the morning and flush.
option 3: bathroom spray.
Prevention is better than cure, right? smol refillable foaming bathroom spray is designed to fight limescale build-up before it takes hold.
Regular use can keep your toilet (and the rest of your bathroom) gleaming, with a crisp eucalyptus scent to boot.
Armed with your smol dishwasher tablets, vinegar, and bathroom spray, your toilet will stay limescale-free with minimal effort. And let’s be honest - less time scrubbing the loo is always a win.
