how to get toothpaste out of clothes & other fabrics.
06 Jan 2025
Want to get toothpaste stains out of clothes, carpets, or upholstery using smol and perhaps a few kitchen ingredient heroes? No problem.
We’ve all been there—you’re brushing your teeth, things get a bit messy, and suddenly your top or the carpet is covered in toothpaste.
Not such a problem when you’re using smol toothpaste. Why? Because it’s a clear paste... no bright stripes and colourful dyes to stain your clothing.
But don’t panic if you’re using toothpaste that contains dye… because whether it’s whitening toothpaste or regular, removing it is easier than you think. All you need are some smol products and a few handy kitchen ingredients.
how to remove toothpaste stains from clothes.
1. scrape off the excess.
Using a spoon (gentler on a fabric than a knife) lightly scrape away any extra toothpaste. Be careful not to rub—this will only push the paste deeper into the fibres, making it trickier to remove.
2. blot with cold water.
Take a clean cloth, wet it with cold water, and blot the stain. No scrubbing here—just dab carefully to avoid spreading the stain further.
Remember, whitening toothpastes contain ingredients that can discolour fabrics if left for too long, so the faster you act, the better!
3. apply stain gel.
smol stain gel to the rescue once again. Massage a small amount into the toothpaste stain. You can use a soft toothbrush to help work it into the fabric, but for delicate materials like silk or wool, skip the brush and let the gel sit on the stain instead.
4. rinse & wash.
After letting the gel work its magic for a few minutes, rinse the area with cold water, and then pop your garment into the washing machine as per the clothing label instructions. smol capsules or laundry liquid will take care of the rest, leaving your clothes fresh and clean!

For those moments when toothpaste goes rogue and lands on the carpet or couch, here’s 3 ways to tackle it with some very common kitchen ingredients.
1. white vinegar.
- Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts cold water.
- Soak a clean cloth in the solution and blot the stain gently.
- Let it sit for a couple of minutes before blotting again with a clean dry cloth.
- Rinse with cold water and allow to dry.
2. lemon juice.
- Cut a lemon in half and rub the pulp onto the stain.
- Rinse with cold water.
- For tough stains (like on cotton), sprinkle some salt over the lemon juice.
- Gently rub the fabric together, working the salt into the fibres.
- Rinse with cold water, and you’re good to go!
3. bicarbonate of soda.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbonate of soda over the stain.
- Lightly spray the area with water and leave for at least an hour.
- Once dry, vacuum up the powder… hello fresh and clean carpet!
With smol laundry detergent and these trusty kitchen ingredients by your side, toothpaste stains won’t stand a chance—whether they’re on your clothes, carpets, or upholstery.
