wipe right with smol’s plastic-free cloths.
20 Feb 2023
When you’re trying to eliminate pointless plastic from your household cleaning it’s a real eye-opener to see just how much of the stuff we have under the sink! For starters, did you know that many of our kitchen cloths contain plastic and are lingering in landfill for decades?
clean surfaces/dirty planet.
Most kitchen cloths and sponges may look harmless but many contain microplastics. The fact that they can contain polyester or nylon makes them in fact not recyclable and also means they will not biodegrade once back out in the environment.
At the same time, while we are using these items they shed microplastics that are invisible to the naked eye. These wash down our drains, flow onwards into our waterways and eventually end up in the sea.
Most cloths are used in the average home for between two to three weeks which adds up to an awful lot of cloths over the course of one year. Once they are discarded they will end up in landfill where they will slowly break down shedding their microplastics.
but what about kitchen paper towel?
It’s not a great solution.
Kitchen roll cannot be recycled and is basically single-use wiping. A large amount is made from recycled paper which means the fibres are too short to be recycled again. Some kerbside recycling will accept clean, dry kitchen roll paper. However, most don’t.
And if it’s dirty then it definitely cannot be recycled. Contaminated waste like this would ruin any paper it was used to create.
cloths made from plants to the rescue.
Luckily there is no need to keep plastic cloths, wipes or single-use paper towels in your home any longer!
Our colourful and super-absorbent smol cloths are 100% natural, biodegradable and home-compostable. They are actually made using cotton and cellulose fibres so come entirely from plants and this makes them 100% plastic-free.
We think they’re perfect for tiles, teacups, toilets and toddlers!
Not only are smol cloths fantastically colourful to brighten any kitchen clean, the pigments used are completely non-toxic, non-hazardous and environmentally safe. They are even printed with a water based environmentally friendly ink. This means when you’ve finished with your cloth (after many many weeks!) you can safely add it to your compost and it can feed your worms quite happily!
easy to use.
And if you need to clean your cloth it’s super easy. Simply rinse under the tap and squeeze out to dry between uses OR if you need a deeper clean just pop it in your dishwasher or washing machine with all your other items. It’ll look good as new in no time.
our 3 most asked cloth questions:
1. How long will my cloths last?
Each cloth will last approximately 4 weeks, depending on the way it is used. Although we often have customers who say each cloth is lasting them months!
2. How do I dispose of my cloths?
When your cloth is past its best, simply pop it in your compost or add to your rubbish. It will harmlessly biodegrade leaving no toxic residue or nasty microplastics behind.
3. How long do they take to biodegrade?
The cloths are 80% disintegrated after 8 weeks (and considered fully disintegrated after 24 weeks).
