Inside a tumble dryer drum, text reads: recycling hot air.

What is a heat pump tumble dryer?

30 Oct 2026

  • A heat pump tumble dryer reuses hot air instead of wasting it.
  • Dries your clothes gently at lower temperatures.
  • Takes a bit longer than other dryers… but saves a lot on energy.
  • More efficient than condenser or vented dryers (and kinder to your clothes).

You’ve maybe heard of a condenser or vented tumble dryer, but how about a heat pump version?

The heat pump tumble dryer is the smart recycler of the laundry world.

Instead of blasting out hot air and constantly drawing in fresh cold air (like vented or standard condenser dryers), it reuses the same warm air to dry your clothing in a closed-loop system.

How a heat pump tumble works.

In simple terms:

  • Hot air evaporates the moisture from your clothes.
  • The damp air then has the water extracted and stored in a tank.
  • The now dry air is then sent back around the drum to keep drying.
  • The whole cycle repeats.
  • Less waste. Lower temperatures. Smaller energy bills.

How is it different from a condenser or vented dryer?

Here’s the big difference: while vented and condenser dryers heat the air once and then release it out, a heat pump dryer keeps the warm air working again and again.

Pros and cons of heat pump tumble dryers

Pros:

  • Uses up to 50% less energy than B rated standard condenser dryers.¹
  • Lower temperatures = less damage, shrinkage or fading to clothes.
  • Costs more upfront but can save big with ongoing bills.
  • Like a condenser, it just needs a water tank emptied (no vent needed).

Cons:

  • Drying time is usually a bit slower than traditional models.
  • Higher upfront cost than vented or condenser dryers.
  • Can take a little longer to dry laundry in stuffy spaces.

So is a heat pump tumble dryer right for you?

If you want the most energy-efficient, fabric-friendly and long-term cost-saving option, then yes, a heat pump dryer is often the best choice.

But…  if you’re pushed for time a vented or condenser dryer may suit you better.

Some newer heat pump models do offer faster cycles (look out for terms like RapidDry™), but this is not a standard feature by any means.
