12 Sept 2025
National Eczema Week 2025 runs from 14 to 21 September
- Eczema affects over 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in the UK
- It’s not contagious, but it can be itchy, sore and relentless
- No permanent “cure” (yet) but there are ways to manage it well
- Gentle, fragrance-free, dermatologically tested products really help
- smol’s non-bio range, including our Allergy UK-recommended capsules, was made with sensitive skin in mind
Most of us have probably heard of eczema but do we really understand what it is? And with National Eczema Week just around the corner, we thought we’d take a look at this all-too-common issue.
what is eczema?
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that causes inflammation, itching, dryness and irritation. It can show up as flaky patches, sore spots, or red, raw skin, and it often shows up in creases (like elbows, knees, or around the eyes).
It’s incredibly common. In fact, the NHS says over 15 million people in the UK live with eczema.
Which is just over 1 in 5 of us.
is eczema contagious?
Definitely not.
You can’t catch eczema and you can’t spread it through touch. It’s a skin condition, not a virus or infection, so while the rash may look dramatic, there’s zero need for social distancing.
what causes eczema?
It seems there’s no single answer here, but these are some of the biggest triggers:
- Genetics (you’re more likely to have it if it runs in your family)
- Allergens or irritants (like dust, pollen, soaps, or fragrance)
- Stress (of course!)
- Temperature changes (hot/cold or dry air can aggravate skin)
- Diet (some people are sensitive to things like dairy or gluten)
- The skin barrier not doing its job properly
can you treat eczema permanently?
There’s no one magic fix, but many people manage their eczema incredibly well with a good routine. That includes:
- Avoiding known triggers
- Moisturising regularly with emollients
- Using mild, fragrance-free cleansers
- Washing clothes with gentle laundry products (hello smol non-bio)
- Sticking to dermatologist-recommended treatments during flare-ups
So in essence… there is hope and better days ahead for your skin if you are currently living through a flare up.

eczema FAQs.
does eczema ever go away?
In some cases (especially in childhood) it can clear up over time. But for many people, it’s a lifelong condition that comes and goes.
can you suddenly develop eczema as an adult?
Yep. Adult-onset eczema is a thing, and it can be triggered by things like stress, new allergies, or environmental changes.
do fragrances make eczema worse?
They can. Especially synthetic ones. That’s why fragrance-free products (like our non-bio laundry capsules) are often recommended by dermatologists and charities like Allergy UK.
is hard water bad for eczema?
Yes, it can strip moisture from your skin and worsen flare-ups. Using a moisturising cleanser and a gentle laundry detergent like smol non-bio can really help.
why do laundry products matter for eczema?
Clothes, sheets, towels… they’re all in constant contact with your skin. Residue from harsh detergents can be irritating, so choosing a dermatologically tested, fragrance-free formula (like ours) is a game-changer.
Whether you’ve lived with eczema forever or you’re just trying to give your skin a break, switching to gentle, proven products can make a world of difference. Try our fragrance-free non-bio laundry capsules (recommended by Allergy UK) or check out our other dermatologically-tested essentials.
