- Let everything dry fully before turning it back on
So many of us have brought dehumidifiers into our homes in recent years.
They extract moisture, dust, and airborne particles from the air AND they can be super helpful drying laundry indoors during the winter months. BUT, with water and contaminants building up inside the unit… if you don’t clean your dehumidifier regularly it can:
- Become a breeding ground for mould, mildew and bacteria
- Work less efficiently
- Develop musty smells
- Potentially blow the contaminants back into the air
So a clean dehumidifier works better, lasts longer, and keeps the air in your home fresher. In short, it’s worth keeping your machine spick and span.
how often should you clean a dehumidifier?
If you’re using your dehumidifier regularly, then every 2-3 weeks is a good rule of thumb. You can get away with cleaning it less often if you’re only using it occasionally. Aim to:
- Check and clean the water tank
- Clean or vacuum the filter
Then every few months it’s also a good idea to:
- Wipe the inner surfaces you can safely reach
- Clean vents, grilles and the outer casing
Some newer models have filter indicator lights that let you know when a cleaning is due after every 250 hours of use which is super useful.
what you’ll need to clean a dehumidifier.
- Sponge or soft cloth
- Soft brush or old toothbrush
- Spray bottle
- Vacuum cleaner (optional)
- Washing-up liquid
- White vinegar
- Warm water
Some manufacturers actually recommend diluted bleach for occasional deep cleans but for regular maintenance, vinegar is all you need and remember to never mix the two together. So let’s go through the cleaning process, step by step…
how to clean a dehumidifier.
1. turn off and unplug.
Before touching anything, switch the machine off and make sure it’s unplugged at the mains.
2. remove the water tank and filter.
Take out the bucket and filter (check the guide for your model if you’re unsure how). Avoid dismantling any parts that aren’t designed to be removed as this could void the warranty.
3. clean the water tank.
This is where you’ll probably find mould and sludge have accumulated.
- Empty any water that’s still in there.
- Wash with warm water and washing-up liquid (our pink grapefruit plant-powered liquid is perfect for the job and smells wonderful!).
- Rinse thoroughly, then spray the inside with equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Leave for 15 minutes (can be up to an hour for stubborn stains).
- Wipe clean and dry fully.
4. clean the filter.
How you do this depends on your model. But for most filters you will want to vacuum them gently to remove any dust and lint.
If your model has a washable filter, you can rinse it with warm water and wash with some washing up liquid if you think it’s needed. Then rinse and let it dry before putting it back. Never run your dehumidifier without the filter installed.
If a filter stays dirty even after you’ve cleaned it, it’s probably time for a new one.
5. wipe inside the unit (where safe).
- Wipe the areas where the tank sits with a slightly damp cloth.
- You can use smol multi purpose spray on areas of visible residue or grime.
- Don't spray water or cleaner into the machine - spray onto your cloth and then wipe.
N.B. DON’T try to clean any internal coils unless your manual says it’s ok.
6. clean vents, grilles and the exterior.
- Wipe the casing with a damp cloth.
- Vacuum or wipe the air intake and outlet grilles.
- Dry everything before you plug your machine back in.
7. reassemble and dry.
Once all parts are completely dry you can reinsert the filter and put the tank back into place.
8. plug in and power up.
Turn your dehumidifier on and you’re back in business!
