Fingerprints and dust.
Why are they so attracted to our TV screens?
We may not notice them when we’re settled down for some prime-time watching, but as soon as we turn off the television, they appear as if by magic.
And it’s not just about looking good. Too much dust around your TV’s vents can actually mess with the airflow (a hot telly is not a happy telly) so we really do need to keep our TV clean.
So here’s a handy smol guide to keeping your TV screen clear and streak-free without any scratches or short circuits.
smol screen clean.
In just 5 steps your television will be tip-top, tidy and totally tended-to!
1. power down.
First things first, switch off your TV before you do anything else. Not just for safety but because all those greasy smudges are far easier to see when the screen isn’t glowing brightly.
2. the dry wipe.
Most screens can be cleaned with one magical tool: the humble microfibre cloth.
Give it a gentle polish in circular motions (no elbow grease needed) and you’ll wipe away everyday dust and marks.
Of course as a laundry detergent company we can’t mention microfibres without a gentle reminder of how to wash them properly. Ensure you pop them inside a Guppyfriend or similar laundry bag - it will trap the many microplastic fibres that these types of cloths will shed when washed. You can then more safely empty them into your bin rather than allowing them to flush from your washing machine into our water supply.
3. stubborn smudges?
Sometimes though, the dry wipe just doesn’t cut it. If your screen's got stubborn fingerprints that won't budge, you can try a screen-cleaning spray - but with care.
It’s important to first check your TV manufacturer’s advice before spraying anything near your TV (because some, like LG, are seriously anti-moisture).
N.B. Never spray anything directly onto the screen. Instead, spray onto your cloth, then wipe. Gently.
4. beyond the glass.
So, while we’re here cleaning the TV it’s a shame to stop at the screen.
Use the same cloth to gently clean around any buttons and the frame. It’s also a good idea to give the vents and ports a cautious once-over, too. This is not the place for dust bunnies.
A soft dusting brush attachment on your vacuum can help here (set to the lowest suction though… and go steady).
5. don’t forget the remote control.
Because it turns out…they’re pretty grotty.
Turns out we touch our TV remotes over 5,000 times a year. And yet, nearly a third of us never clean them.¹
Yikes.
Let’s fix that:
- Lightly spritz a clean cloth with a multi purpose spray and wipe down the whole remote. smol’s multi purpose is a great option due to its powerful degreasing action - the nemesis to sticky fingers!
- For the crumb and fluff traps between those buttons, a toothpick or cotton bud works wonders. Go gently though, no need to jab too hard and damage the remote.
the final frame.
And when you’re all done? Time to sit down, put your feet up, and watch your favourite show!
A clean screen gives a sharper picture, a healthier telly and a lot less eye twitching next time you’re watching anything in HD.
Happy cleaning!
