homemade window cleaner.
Fans of DIY window cleaning solutions love the fact it’s kind to your wallet but they also appreciate the fact there’s no mystery chemicals. So let’s find out what you’ll need to make your very own glass spray.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- ¼ cup of clear white vinegar (or lemon juice)
- ½ teaspoon washing up liquid
- 2 cups warm water
- Essential oils (optional, but smells nice)
- Spray bottle
first… gather the ingredients.
Grab a clean jug and measure out your white vinegar or lemon juice—both work because of their mild acidity which is perfect for cutting through grime and dirt. Add the washing up liquid to your vinegar for some extra grease-fighting power, the warm water and, if you’re opting for an essential oil, just a few drops into the solution is all you’ll need.
next… mix It up.
Pour the mixture into a clean spray bottle (preferably one you are reusing and repurposing having used up its contents). Shake your solution gently until everything is combined. Making sure you use warm water goes a long way to helping the ingredients mix well but don’t panic if you’ve used cold water - your mixture will still work.
Important Safety Note: Whenever you are mixing ingredients with vinegar NEVER be tempted to include bleach. The combination produces toxic chlorine gas, which can be super harmful. Stick to our simple recipe, and you’re in the clear!
get wiping!
You can now spray your glass surfaces, windows or mirrors with your homemade vinegar solution and use a microfibre, lint-free cloth (smol cloths made from plants also work well) to wipe away the dirt and grime.
Then stand back and admire the streak-free shine!
N.B DON’T use a vinegar-based solution like this on your TV screens. There is a special anti-glare coating surface on your TV glass that can be damaged by the acidity of vinegar. Always use a screen-safe TV cleaner recommended by your TV manufacturer.
weekly, monthly or yearly?
And for the age-old question… how often should we clean our windows: many window cleaning companies recommend a full clean inside and out twice a year at minimum for residential windows. And if your home is in an area of high tree pollen you might need to make this happen 3 or 4 times a year.
With your own homemade window cleaner you’ll be guaranteed a sparkle and can relax knowing the next batch is quick and easy to make whenever you need it again. So now you’ve got no more excuses—time to tackle those windows! Happy cleaning!
