the rust is history

how to remove rust stains.

16 Jan 2025

Rust stains strike terror into the hearts of those who have battled them in the past. It’s often because they’ve used bleach in their efforts to remove it… more on that in a bit! But the good news is that with the right know-how the rust will be history.

But before we dive into how to remove it, let’s get a little science-y for a sec.

what even is rust?

Rust happens when iron (or an item containing iron) is exposed to oxygen and moisture over a long period of time. The iron reacts with the oxygen, creating this reddish-brown coating called rust. This process is called rusting. What you don’t want is for the rust to get on your clothing because it’s more than likely going to cause a stain.

stain pain.

But if the worst does happen… don’t panic. There are ways to salvage your fabric.

Before we get into the good stuff though, here’s a pro tip: Remember the reference to chlorine bleach earlier? Don’t use it. It’ll make things worse. Way worse. Bleach is itself an oxidizer and it will react with iron to create even more rust… aside from this, it’s going to bleach your fabric so let’s concentrate on some stain removal that’s going to work.

1. vinegar power.

  • Pour some white vinegar directly onto the stain and leave it there for a few minutes.
  • Then, blot it with a clean cloth
  • If the stain is large, mix equal parts vinegar and water and soak the item for 1–2 hours.
  • Rinse in cold water and wash as usual with smol laundry capsules

2. bicarbonate of soda.

  • Mix 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with 3 litres of cold water.
  • Soak the stain for 5 minutes.
  • If you need a more targeted clean - make a paste with bicarb and a little water and apply.
  • Leave for 5 minutes before rinsing in cold water.
  • Wash as usual with smol laundry capsules.

3. washing up liquid.

  • Mix 1/4 teaspoon of smol plant-powered washing up liquid with warm water.
  • Dab it on the stain and let it sit for around 5 minutes.
  • This method is great on fresher rust stains that haven’t yet set in.

4. lemon juice + salt combo.

N.B. Only use this method on white items as darker clothing can bleach.

  • Sprinkle a little salt on the stain.
  • Pour lemon juice on top of the salted stain.
  • Lay the garment flat and let it dry in the sun.

a few good-to-knows.

Remember these top 5 tips when it comes to tackling rust stains.

  1. Let it air-dry in the sun. Nature’s stain-fighting sunlight power might just do the trick.
  2. Cold wash with smol capsules or laundry liquid. Hot water can set the stain.
  3. Avoid scrubbing too hard—it can damage the fabric.
  4. Get to it fast. The quicker you react, the better your chances of success.
  5. NEVER put the item into the tumble dryer until the stain is gone. Heat can lock it in.

Now go forth and banish those stains like the rust-fighting pro you are!
