A tree branch with sap and text reading: resin to the occasion

How to get tree sap out of clothes.

20 Apr 2026

Tree sap cheat sheet:

  • Freezing tree sap is one of the simplest ways to remove it because hardened sap is easier to scrape off fabric.
  • Always remove as much excess sap as possible before treating the stain.
  • Alcohol-based products like hand sanitiser can help dissolve sticky resin.
  • Oily substances like peanut butter can break down sap, but may leave a second stain behind.
  • Avoid tumble drying until the stain is fully gone, as heat can set sap into the fabric.

Whether you're wandering through the woods, setting up a Christmas tree or resting up against a tree stump at your favorite hiking spot, nothing hits quite as hard as that moment of realisation: you've got tree sap on your clothes.

It’s enough to put you off that nature walk… a sticky, gooey mess that can ruin your favorite fleece faster than you can say "should have stayed home".

But fear not, fellow adventurer. We’ve gathered every trick in the book (and there’s some quirky ones) so you never have to toss another tree-sap-stained item of clothing again.

Get ready.

First things first. Before you go diving into the magical world of sap removal, there's one important first step: scrape off the excess. It’s best to use a spoon or a blunt knife to gently remove as much of the sticky stuff as possible. Trust us, your chosen treatment will work a lot better as a result.

Secondly, test your treatment of choice on a hidden part of the fabric that way you can be sure there will be no colour changes or damage to the fabric ahead of time.

So… which trick takes your fancy?

1. The freeze.

This ones going to really cool down a sticky situation.

Freezing might sound a bit nonsensical, but it's one of the least invasive and most effective methods for getting rid of sap. If the item of clothing fits, simply pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes. No freezer? No problem! Just place a bag of ice over the stain for the same amount of time.

Once it’s frozen solid, you can break off the hardened sap with your hands. Then, scrape off any remaining goo with your spoon or knife. Once the sap has gone just wash as usual with a smol laundry capsule and consider the battle won.

2. Stain remover.

It’s the classic hero and smol stain gel could well be the simplest, most predictable solution for battling tree sap stains. It's designed to handle sticky situations like this! Simply apply a few pumps of the gel directly onto the sap stain, then take an old clean toothbrush or clean cloth and work it into the fabric. Let it soak for five minutes then rinse in cool water and wash as usual with your smol laundry capsule or laundry liquid.

In this instance it’s a good idea to wash your clothing on the warmest recommended temperature for the fabric - so you’ll need to check your clothing care label to make sure you know what that is!

3. Surgical spirit or hand sanitiser.

A little surgical spirit or hand sanitiser (min. 70% alcohol based) can act like a magic potion for sticky tree sap stains! Simply pour some onto the sap, work it in with an old clean toothbrush or clean cloth, and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

After that, wash it as usual with your smol detergent, and hey presto! No more stain.

4. Peanut butter or cooking oil.

Okay, here’s where things get weird.

Yes, peanut butter or cooking oil might sound unconventional but these kitchen staples actually break down tree sap like nobody’s business. If you rub them onto the sap the oils will begin to break down the sap allowing you to scrape it away.

However... there’s a catch.

These two can both leave behind oily stains that will then need their own special treatment. So BE WARNED and weigh up if you think it’s worth it.

The last word: Patience.

You may need to repeat your chosen method a couple of times (or even combine methods) to get the sap fully out. Just make sure you don’t toss the garment into a hot tumble dryer as any heat on lingering sap will set it into the fabric for good. Line dry your items outside or even indoors instead to avoid the tumble dryer trap.

Armed with these tree sap conquering tips, you’ll be the hero of your own laundry room. And those sticky sap stains? They’ll never stand a chance.
