What does dermatologically tested mean?

29 Oct 2026

  • Dermatologically tested means a product has undergone testing involving the skin
  • It doesn’t have one universal testing standard in the UK
  • So it’s worth asking who tested it, how they tested and what the results showed
  • It does not mean allergy-proof or guarantee no-one will react
  • Dermatologically tested, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic mean different things
  • Independent dermatological accreditation provides another level of reassurance

When something is labeled “dermatologically tested” it certainly sounds reassuring.

So reassuring, that 38% of UK adults in our research think the term has a legal definition.¹

It doesn’t.

So maybe we shouldn’t just ask, has a product been dermatologically tested? But instead find out what the testing actually involved.

What does dermatologically tested actually mean?

The phrase means a product has undergone testing involving the skin to assess how well it is tolerated.

But it doesn’t tell you:

  • Who did the testing
  • What tests were used
  • How many people the product was tested on
  • What reactions were checked for
  • What the results were

Here at smol when we make a dermatologically tested claim, it means a product has been patch tested by an independent external laboratory following standard industry testing protocols.

What is dermatological patch testing?

Patch testing assesses how skin reacts to a product under controlled conditions.

For smol products that are dermatologically tested, it means that independent external testing found the products to be non-irritating under the test conditions.

However, it’s not the same thing as the medical patch testing a dermatologist does to discover if somebody has a contact allergy to something.

Does dermatologically tested mean it won't irritate skin?

No product can promise that everybody will react to it in the same way.

Dermatological testing is useful to see how a product performs during testing but it can’t guarantee that nobody will ever experience a reaction to it.

So if you know you have an allergy to something, always check the full ingredient information.

What does dermatologically tested washing up liquid mean?

Hands spend a lot of time in contact with something like washing up liquid.

Repeated exposure to water and detergents can contribute to dry or irritated hands, and the NHS lists soaps and detergents among common causes of irritant contact dermatitis.

So if you’re choosing a dermatologically tested Washing Up Liquid, look for:

  1. Who did the testing
  2. If it was an independent test
  3. What the testing showed
  4. If there is additional independent accreditation
  5. Does the product make a claim about being gentle on skin

What’s the difference between tested vs accredited?

They sound similar but they’re not quite the same.

Claim

What it means

Dermatologically tested

A product has undergone skin-related testing.

Dermatologically accredited

An independent dermatological organisation has reviewed evidence against its own standards.

Suitable for sensitive skin

Supporting evidence shows a product is made to minimise irritation.

Fragrance-free

There is no added perfume in the product.

Hypoallergenic

A product is designed to be less likely to cause an allergic reaction but it’s still no guarantee.

The Skin Health Alliance, for example, says its dermatological accreditation involves independent dermatologists scientifically reviewing ingredients, clinical trial data and evidence of efficacy against its skin-safety standards.
